Do You Know Your Gift?

God gives every believer a spiritual gift (or set of gifts) designed to reveal His grace, build His kingdom, and minister to others.

Spiritual gifts differ from natural talents. Have you discovered your spiritual gift? How do you know it is not just a natural talent?

Before you begin the discovery process, examine your relationship with Jesus. Spiritual gifts are supernatural gifts from God to those who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, and have the Holy Spirit living within them.

Ten Reasons to Believe, a brochure series from RBC Ministries, addresses several important issues (like faith, suffering, and the existence of God) that concern believers and non-believers alike. If you want to explore your spiritual beliefs, go there first.

Are you ready to identify and use your special gift? Here are six ways to discover your spiritual gift and fulfill God's plan and purpose for your life.

Assessment tests help you identify your gift.

Assessment tests help you identify your gift.

1. Spiritual Gift Assessment

Spiritual gift analysis and assessment tests are tools that help you discover your spiritual gift.

Ministry Tools Resource Center (MinTools) and similar websites offer free or low-cost assessment tests for this purpose.

Most analysis tools feature multiple choice questions that survey the various categories of spiritual gifts that you find in the Bible. You can read about them throughout Scripture, but Romans 12:6-8 is a good place to start.

2. Spiritual Gift Inventory

Like a spiritual gift analysis, a spiritual gift inventory is a helpful tool to discover your spiritual gift.

MinTools created a comprehensive inventory list from key verses in Romans, Ephesians, 1 Corinthians, and other books in the Bible.

Like any man-made resource, spiritual gift inventories are imperfect tools. So consult an inventory list in a prayerful manner, and let God have the final word.

After all, inventories "are taken by human beings who may be influenced in their responses by a variety of factors that could hinder accuracy," says Phyllis Kline, the founder of MinTools.

3. Pastors and Teachers

When you are trying to discover your spiritual gift, do not overlook your church leaders. Pastors, Sunday school teachers, and other ministry staff can help you pinpoint your gift and identify your calling.

When my husband and I lived near Houston, Tomball Bible Church offered a series of Sunday school classes for new church members. We signed up for a spiritual gifts class.

Our teachers modeled the study on the SHAPE Discovery Program, a Purpose Driven resource from Saddleback Church. Not only did the class confirm our spiritual gifts, but it also helped us identify ministry areas that we overlooked.

Check around to see if your church or another church in your city offers a class on how to discover your spiritual gift.

4. Coaches and Counselors

A Christian career counselor or life coach can help you discover your spiritual gift. Look for a coach or counselor online, or ask the ministry staff at your church for a referral.

Christian Career Center has a wealth of online information for Christian job hunters or believers who want to discover their gift and calling. Kevin and Kay Marie Brennfleck, national certified career counselors and life coaches, are the website founders.

Christian Career Center provides job search assistance, career counseling, and various tools that you may find helpful in your quest to discover your spiritual gift. Request a free consultation with the counselors, or sign up for the newsletter when you visit the website.

5. Ministry Involvement

"What do you enjoy most about serving the Lord?" asks Charles Stanley, the founder of In Touch Ministries. Your ministry involvement be the best place to discover your spiritual gift.

"You will look forward to the responsibilities ... that call on you to use your gift," says Stanley. "On the other hand, you will not be as motivated for tasks that are outside your giftedness."

Involve yourself in various Christian ministries. As you explore the different avenues of ministry, you will discover the best area of service. It will be the one that motivates you and uses your God-given abilities and gifts.

6. Focused Prayer

Prayer is the most important way to discover your spiritual gift. So pray about it. Ask God to reveal your gift. He wants to show you.

God wants you to use your spiritual gift to reveal His grace and serve His people.

Do you have a life verse, a special Bible verse that touches your heart and influences your life? Proverbs 3:5-6 is my life verse. The Message, a Bible translation by Eugene Peterson, renders it this way:

"Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he's the one who will keep you on track."

If you trust God, He will guide you in every aspect of your life. He will help you discover your gift and identify your calling so you can fulfill His plan and purpose for your life.

Oooops! "Spiritual gifts are for believers only."

I think not. See: ROMANS: Chapter 12,

you will see your error.

God imparts his gifts to every individual. God's Holy Spirit activates them as required by God within each person.

Hello, Dave. Thank you for reading my hub and sharing your opinion. We clearly disagree. In Romans 12 and latter chapters in the book, Paul explains to believers how they are to live out the rich truths revealed in the earlier chapters.

Only believers have the Holy Spirit living within them. The gifts of the Holy Spirit (spiritual gifts) are first given to believers at salvation (when the Holy Spirit indwells them) to build the body and further the kingdom. Unbelievers have no need for spiritual gifts, as the Bible says their spirit is dead and only made alive in Christ.

Annette: Granted, only believers have the Holy Spirit living within, but that is not to say that "ALMIGHTY GOD" has not imparted his gifts to all. Knowledge, Wisdom, faith healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, interpretation of tongues. These are the gifts imparted to every man, and once one becomes a believer, then the Holy Spirit activates one, many or all.

There is nothing scriptural to substantiate that God withholds any of these gifts, but yes the Holy Spirit activates them.

Think about it, every person believer or not has knowledge, and with knowledge the wisdom to apply the knowledge to some extent whether it is used to serve God or not.

Dave, spiritual gifts are given to God's people (the family of believers) by the Holy Spirit for the "common good" (1 Corinthians 12). These gifts are given according to God's sovereign will (as He determines). They are given to believers for the purpose of serving and building the body of Christ (Ephesians 4).

My article is meant as a practical piece to help believers "discover" (identify) their unique spiritual gifts. It is not a theological piece on knowledge or the unbeliever's response to God's call of salvation.

Thank you, again, for reading my article and sharing your comments. I am not going to debate you on theological matters.

Hi, Annette,

I enjoyed reading your article. I believe it is very helpful to point men towards Jesus who are open to looking deeper into God's word. I was also impressed by the way you dealt with a comment which had some disagreement. You've offered truth about our Jesus as you understand it, and very graciously refused argument. God bless you, and I pray for God to work great things in your life and bless all who come to read your sharing of kingdom things.
